'Views from the Long Trail'

Collection

The inspiration for this series came after my husband fulfilled a longstanding dream of hiking the Long Trail from end to end. After months of research and planning, he began his Northbound solo hike in September of 2024. Along the way he made sure to document his journey. He captured views from tops of mountains, river crossings, breathtaking sunsets, and various parts of the trail under dappled light from trees. This journey was a test of strength and endurance, not without challenges and setbacks (including an ankle injury). When he finally made it to the end it was like passing a baton. “You’re up Jen.”

Although I can not compare such an arduous physically and mentally demanding adventure to my days spent in the comfort of my studio, this painting series presented its own set of challenges. On several occasions I had to hit pause on this project in order to deal with loss, grief and a profound shift in perspective. Metaphorically speaking, I was climbing my own set of mountains. As I look back on this collection I can proudly say that “I did that” amidst all the struggles. An added surprise came when I sold this entire collection within days of displaying them. This never happened to me before and it felt nothing short of magical.

“Views from the Long Trail” is ultimately a love letter to Vermont, to endurance, to partnerships and to a shared belief that our dreams matter. And to you, dear reader, I say, “you’re up!”
